Denver Most Active City

Denver Most Active City

My favorite Mile High City made it onto a couple of cool lists that I came across while browsing my favorite online news source…Facebook :)

First, Denver was named Most Active city in the nation, and one of the Top 10 Healthiest Cities for Women by SELF Magazine.

Here is what they had to say about D-Town, which I think easily applies to the entire Denver Metro area…

Women here rocked all our measures of fitness: Seventy-nine percent exercised recently, 41 percent more commuters bike to work than average, and there are more gyms than in most cities. And it shows. Denver is among the five leanest places in the land.

One advocate for activity is Maren Stewart, 44, who as president of LiveWell Colorado works to remove barriers to activity, such as inadequate sidewalks and bike lanes. “Asking your boss to unlock a stairwell or swap in healthier snacks at the vending machine may seem like small changes, but they go a long way,” she says.

Make your town healthier: Walk to work, the grocery store or your kids’ school, and help others hoof it at WalkToSchool.org.

The other list that I found Denver on was Yahoo Travel’s Top 10 Destinations to see Holiday Lights…and I have to say, Denver’s lights are always spectacular.

Here is what they had to say…

If you can sneak in a Colorado ski vacation before the new year, don’t miss a stopover in Denver, decked out with downright dazzling light displays during their “Mile High Holiday” events.

December 2 and 3 see the “9NEWS Parade of Lights” march from the festively illuminated City and County Building (the city’s largest lighting display, it’s lit November 25) through the downtown Denver area, featuring nearly a million shiny lights, a dozen twinkling floats, soaring balloons, marching bands, and more (free; www.denverparadeoflights.com).

Also pop by the Denver Botanic Gardens’ “Blossoms of Lights” exhibition, where more than a million colorful holiday lights are integrated into the gardens, and further enhanced by extras like glistening ice sculptures and a strolling choir (December 2–January 1; $9.50 adults, $6.50 kids ages 3 to 12; www.botanicgardens.org).

Meanwhile, the Denver Zoo’s “Zoo Lights” event invites visitors to embark on a holiday lights safari – its 38 acres are embellished with more than 150 animated animal sculptures (December 9–January 1; $9 adults, $5 kids ages 3 to 11; www.denverzoo.org).
