Backyard Dwellings in the Denver Area

Backyard Dwellings in the Denver Area

The zoning laws in Denver recently changed, and if you haven’t checked your new zoning code, this is a perfect time to do so…click here….go ahead, I’ll wait.

So, how did it go?

Are you still allowed to have a carriage house or mother-in-law unit on your lot? I hope so, because according to this article in today’s USA Today more and more people are relying on those extra units or living spaces to pay some bills or care for family members. There is “an accelerating trend toward adding second units to homes, whether for extra cash or elder care.”

These tidy units — known as in-law suites, granny flats, sidekicks, backyard cottages or, in Australia, “kangaroo apartments” — serve multiple purposes at a time retiring Baby Boomers are trying to stay in their homes despite shrinking stock portfolios, adult children can’t find jobs and aging parents need help.”, according to the article. I have to say, I totally believe in the importance of this growing trend as populations grow and hopefully innovative ways to avoid sprawl into Denver’s beautiful and priceless open spaces.

Rentable/livable bonus spaces will only become more valuable as city-close and even suburban homes need to serve an ever-growing population.

I did a little Pinterest surfing and found some cute little dwellings that would make great backyard units!
